Emmanuel Olivier

Biography

Emmanuel Olivier studied piano at the CNR de Lille and the Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles before entering the CNSM de Paris, where he obtained the Diplôme de formation supérieure de piano, as well as 1st prizes in analysis and chamber music. Fascinated by vocal music, literature and the stage, he continued his studies in the vocal accompaniment and conducting classes, where he again received two advanced training diplomas. After teaching at the Maîtrise de Radio-France, he became assistant professor of vocal accompaniment at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse (CNSM), and on several occasions gave master-classes on the French repertoire at the Central Conservatory in Beijing and at the Musikhochschule in Karlsruhe. He also teaches at Royaumont, the CNSM in Lyon, the Universität for Musik in Vienna, the Opéra Studio de l'Opéra du Rhin and the Académie Européenne du Festival d'Aix-en-Provence.

He performs as a soloist and accompanies numerous singers at the BNF, the Cité de la Musique, the Montpellier and Aix festivals, the Lille and Tours operas, the Auditorium of the Musée d'Orsay... as well as in Europe, Jordan, China and Japan.

His recording of Soir païen, with Alexis Kossenko and Anna Reinhold, released in spring 2020 by Aparté, was unanimously acclaimed by critics (5 diapasons, 5 Classica stars and 5 Opéra clefs de sol).

He also works as a vocal coach, performing a wide range of repertoire from Mozart and Paisiello to Berg and Weill, with a particular interest in contemporary music: he has taken part in premieres by Campo, Dusapin, Eötvös, Herz, Marti, Pécou, etc. This has given him the opportunity to meet a number of stage directors, including Jean-François Sivadier, David Lescot, Jean-Yves Ruf, Sandrine Anglade, David McVicar and Bob Wilson.

Working with great conductors such as Altinoglu, Eschenbach, Eötvös, Gardiner, Haïm and Harding, he became John Nelson's assistant for the 3 operas by Berlioz: Benvenuto Cellini, Béatrice et Bénédict at the Châtelet and Les Troyens in Geneva, which naturally led him to conducting operas.

A long and fruitful partnership with Jean-Claude Malgoire has led him to conduct La Grande Écurie and La chambre du Roy on numerous occasions, in works by Gluck (with Philippe Jarrousky), Mozart, Rossini, La Voix humaine (with Véronique Gens), and the Orchestre du Grand Théâtre de Reims in Tosca. He recently conducted La Clémence de Titus and l'Occasione fa il ladro for the Atelier Lyrique de Tourcoing.

He is also musical director of L'Amour masqué and Cendrillon at the Auditorium of the Musée d'Orsay, as well as Glass's Enfants terribles in Bordeaux, Bilbao, Rotterdam and at the Théâtre de l'athénée in Paris, and Gianni Schicchi on tour with the Co(opéra)tive.

Emmanuel Olivier has been a lyric coach in the singing department of the Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles since 2023-2024.
