Classical and Contemporary Music
Vous avez dit dégénérée ?
For this second appointment at the Hungarian Cultural Institute, the Conservatoire's chamber music section cultivates "Entartek Music", and in particular the works of the illustrious Bartók and Stravinsky. In May 1938, the State Councillor of the 3rd Reich organised an exhibition in Düsseldorf, "Entartete Musik", on "degenerate" music. Following Goebbels' speech on music policy, the aim was to show the lack of purity of certain types of music, using the ideological paraphernalia of populism, racism, anti-Semitism and nationalism. A list of degenerate composers was drawn up. It included some of the greatest musical geniuses of the 19th and 20th centuries, including Bartok, who asked to be included "out of honour".
