Guillaume Sutre was only 18 when he won the 1988 Curci International Violin Competition in Naples and the ARD International Piano Trio Competition in Munich. He quickly went on to win 1st Prize at the FNAPEC European Chamber Music Competition (1989), 1st Prize at the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition (USA 1990), the Charles Oulmont Foundation Prize (1990), 1st Prize at the Lily Laskine Competition (1991) and the SACEM Georges Enesco Prize (1994). In 1999, he was appointed Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
Born in Douai, he was admitted at the age of 14 to the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, where he studied with Gérard Poulet and Jean-Claude Pennetier. After quickly completing his studies in France, he went on to study at Indiana University (Bloomington, USA) with Josef Gingold, Franco Gulli, Menahem Pressler and Janos Starker, and then in Cologne, Germany, with the members of the Amadeus Quartet.
He quickly developed a passion for chamber music, founding the Trio Wanderer in 1986, and ten years later becoming first violin of the Quatuor Ysaÿe for almost 20 years, until their last concert in January 2014 at the Cité de la Musique in Paris. He quickly developed a passion for chamber music, founding the Trio Wanderer in 1986, and ten years later becoming first violin of the Quatuor Ysaÿe for almost 20 years, until their last concert in January 2014 at the Cité de la Musique in Paris. His extensive repertoire includes the complete chamber music for strings by Beethoven and Brahms, and Haydn's 68 quartets, among nearly 500 works performed in concert. Together with his wife Kyunghee Kim-Sutre, they form a violin and harp duo and constantly explore the existing repertoire for this ensemble, carrying out extensive research in music libraries around the world.
Their recordings for Sony Classical, Decca, Harmonia Mundi, Naïve, Aeon, Ysaÿe Records, Hortus and Sonarti have received the highest distinctions in France and abroad. The complete duets by Joseph Haydn and Mozart, recorded in public, has been hailed by the critics as a benchmark version, and the recording of the quartets by A. Boucourechliev received the award for best recording. Boucourechliev's recording of A. Boucourechliev's quartets won the Grand Prix du Disque de l'Académie Charles Cros in 2001, and his last two recordings J. Woelfl: The Paris Years (Sonarti) and Pensées Intimes (Hortus/WWI) were awarded a 5 by Diapason.
For ten years he taught a specialised string quartet class at the C.R.R. in Paris.Since 2008, he has been professor of violin and director of chamber music for strings at UCLA (University of California at Los Angeles). His desire to pass on his knowledge is not limited to teaching, and he can regularly be found on stage surrounded by his students or conducting a recording session, such as for the Calidore Quartet's first CD released in 2015.He has been a member of the jury of prestigious international competitions such as Paris/Long-Thibaud, Fermo/A. Postacchini and Bordeaux/Quatuor à Cordes.
Guillaume Sutre plays an Italian violin made by Gregorio Antoniazzi, an enigmatic 18th-century Venetian luthier. He has been teaching at the Académie musicale de Villecroze since 2006.
