This masterclass will be followed by a concert by the saxophone ensembles of the Royal Conservatories of Brussels and Antwerp on 5 February 2025 at 7 pm in the Joseph Jongen Auditorium of the Conservatoire royal de Bruxelles.

Biography

Lars Mlekusch appears around the world as a conductor in venues including the Musikverein Wien, Wiener Konzerthaus, Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Het Concertgebouw and Muziekgebouw Amsterdam, Casa da Música Porto, Teatro Nacional de Cuba, National Concert Hall Taipei and at festivals such as Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, Festival Wien Modern, impuls festival Graz or Salzburg Aspekte.

He has conducted ensembles and orchestras such as Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra, Collegium Novum Zürich, Klangforum Wien, Ensemble PHACE Vienna, Stuttgarter Kammerorchester, Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart, Österreichisches Ensemble für Neue Musik Salzburg, Georgisches Kammerorchester Ingolstadt, MIT Saxophone Ensemble Taiwan, Orquesta Sinfonica Nacional de Cuba, Ensemble Schallfeld Graz, Cantus Ensemble Zagreb, Le Nouvel Ensemble Contemporain and has also worked in close collaboration with musicians such as Anton Kernjak, Juliet Frazier, Kai Wessel, Johanna Vargas, Yury Revich, Duo Aliada and many others. 

He works with composers such as Georges Aperghis, Aureliano Cattaneo, José María Sánchez-Verdú, Johannes-Maria Staud, Bernhard Lang, Germán Toro-Pérez, Francesco Filidei, Sarah Nemtsov, Alberto Posadas, Chaya Czernowin, Helmut Lachenmann, Germán Toro-Pérez, Agata Zubel, Simon Steen-Andersen, Klaus Lang, Wolfgang Mitterer or Xu Yi and conducted many first performances. His recordings appeared on labels such as KAIROS, PHACE, Gramola, Col Legno and many radio stations. 

He served as the artistic director of several festivals in Vienna and Zurich and successfully cooperated with institutions such as Wiener Konzerthaus, Radiokulturhaus Wien, Galerie Belvedere, ORF Radio Stephansdom, Kunsthalle Zürich and others. 

Since 20 years he has served as a professor. First at the Musik und Kunst Universität Wien and since 2015 at the Zurich University of the Arts. In 2016, he ended his performance career as a concert saxophonist due to his long battle with focal dystonia. He feels privileged to have had the opportunity to mentor so many great musicians from around the world. He finds great fulfillment in collaborating with outstanding musicians and composers, particularly within the contemporary repertoire.
