Rethinking the piano body and its vibration: extended pedal for new intra-piano playing
June 3 2022 19:00
The extended pedal is an innovative system allowing precise control of dampers beyond the keyboard. The result of a research project led by Martin Loridan with the support of the FNRS, the device is a physical extension that is grafted onto the piano, allowing access to the forte pedal from a distance. Remote control of the dampers greatly expands contemporary piano playing, creating new avenues for creation.
In this first public demonstration of the extended pedal, the body of the piano is transformed into a complex sound object with multiple resonances.
Two compositions created by Tom de Cock, Tomoko Honda and Sara Picavet, illustrate the new possible worlds. The piano becomes a giant body whose multiple internal parts generate complex timbres and build haunting reverberations, controlled by the new system.
