Romeo and Juliet
No need for long sentences to sum up the story of Romeo and Juliet: everyone knows the tragic death of the two star-crossed lovers, sacrificed because of a ridiculous hatred between two enemy families. What we are going to talk about here is youth: "Romeo and Juliet" is a little bit about us, about kids playing at being adults, in a world that is getting darker and darker. "Romeo and Juliet" is not mawkishness and over-romanticism, it is simply youth. They are misunderstood teenagers like all teenagers, who hit their heads when they kiss for the first time, who discover their own body, that of the other, who make no concessions to authority, to adults. "Their love is impossible, so it takes place", as Olivier Py said. And it is the hope of Romeo and Juliet that made them survive beyond death, and that brought their universal and timeless story into our hands as young artists to give our vision, our interpretation. Above their graves, flowers. And if they are roses they will bloom.
