First prize in oboe and chamber music at the Paris Conservatoire, he has also won five international prizes (Ancona, Prague, Munich, Belgrade and Geneva).
In 1987 he was appointed professor of oboe and chamber music at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, then professor at the Guildhall School of Music in London (from 1997 to 2009).
Called upon on five continents as a soloist and teacher, he also conducts the Mariinsky St Petersburg, the Simon Bolivar de Caracas, the Orchestre National d'Ile de France, the Bordeaux Opera, the Orchestre de chambre Royal de Wallonie, the Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa, the Orchestre de Bretagne and the Orchestre d'Auvergne.
His extensive discography covers the entire history of music from Couperin to Stockhausen.
He has been a founding member of the Quintette Moragues since 1980, and is also an active chamber musician with many other partners.
The transcriber of over 1,300 adaptations ranging from sonatas to full-length operas, David Walter has also composed some thirty works. His story opera, 'La jeune fille sans mains', based on an adaptation of the Brothers Grimm fairy tale in collaboration with playwright Emmanuelle Cordoliani, premiered on 10 February 2015 at the Théâtre de Dijon.
