The story of Clara Schumann, wife of Robert Schumann, is part of a century that saw the emergence of many female musicians who were often confined to a bourgeois musical practice. Her story can be compared with two of her contemporaries: Fanny Hensel, sister of Felix Mendelssohn, and Louise Farrenc.
