24 Préludes et Fugues de Shostakovich op. 87

This concert is part of the Tribute to Shostakovich (1906-1975) week from 7 to 10 April 2024. Three concerts are being organised to mark the occasion.

April 10 2025 19:00

It was at the jury of the International Johann Sebastian Bach Competition in Leipzig in 1950 that Shostakovich found the inspiration to write this tribute cycle to mark the 200th anniversary of Bach's death. Tatiana Nikolayeva won the competition and became the dedicatee of the work, which she premiered in 1952 in St Petersburg. These 24 preludes and fugues alternate the 24 keys, alternating major and minor keys in the order of fifths. The work will be performed in its entirety!
