For Masters students in Early Music, the personal artistic project comprises the completion of a critical edition of a piece of music.
Working with an unedited manuscript of a work from the Conservatoire library, this project has a number of objectives: demonstrating the importance of research, studying and comparing sources, developing critical thinking skills, getting to grips with the peculiarities of historical notation and typographies, and developing a methodology which allows the student to modernise and digitalise a text, according to modern editing standards, and with respect for the original source.
The chosen work is also the subject of personal research, allowing the student to put into practice the different skills acquired through the rest of their course, with the aim of enriching and giving direction to their personal interpretation.
Finally, the edited pieces are worked on within the chamber music class, and performed by students in a public concert. (see Treasures of the library).
Since 2015, the best final projects have been published by Castejon Music Editions as part of the collection of the Conservatoire royal de Bruxelles.
